Q: When must employers pay for travel time?
A: Federal law requires employers to pay nonexempt employees for all hours worked. Whether travel time is considered hours worked can be complicated. The determination depends on when and where nonexempt employees travel. Commuting time, for example, is not considered hours worked, but travel from location to location throughout the work day is. Special rules apply when travel involves an overnight stay or travel to another city.
